How does cryotherapy work and what are its key benefits?

At LondonCryo, we offer a range of treatments, and today, we are covering cryotherapy. We are going to be exploring how the treatment works and what the key benefits are that you can experience.

What is cryotherapy, and how does it work?

Cryotherapy is a treatment that involves exposing the whole body or just areas of it to very cold temperatures, usually as low as -130 °C. As the temperature is so low, you won’t be exposed to it for long, generally, it is around 1-3 minutes. You will stand alone in an enclosure to fit your body, but your head will remain outside and not exposed to the temperature. We also offer a CryoFacial treatment, but this is not as extreme and uses a cool temperature on just the face.

Very cold temperatures are used in this way to constrict the blood vessels and in doing so, the blood will move away from your limbs and go towards where all your organs are. This then increases oxygen and anti-inflammatory proteins while reducing pain, inflammation, and more.

What are the key benefits?

There are lots of benefits to cryotherapy, and we could talk about them all day, but we want to make this quick and easy for you. So, here are the key benefits that you can experience.

  • Improved mental well-being - Cryotherapy can help improve your mental well-being. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression or something else, this treatment can ease your mind. This is because exposure to the cold temperature can release endorphins and adrenaline which impact mood.

  • Eases pain - If you are experiencing pain because of a condition or injury, it can be reduced with cryotherapy. It works by reducing the number of pain signals your brain receives, and cryotherapy also reduces inflammation. As a result, you can experience ease in pain after treatment. Arthritis, migraines, fibromyalgia, are just some of the painful conditions, this treatment can help.

  • Injury recovery - Maybe you have an injury from playing sports, work or something else? If so, cryotherapy can help. Regular treatments can assist with reducing swelling and inflammation. For athletes, this treatment option is particularly good because it also helps heal tender and painful muscles.

  • Weight loss - Cryotherapy can also help you if you are on a weight loss journey. This is because exposure to cold temperatures burns calories and your metabolic rate will be boosted. So, you can feel energized after the treatment, and after more than one, you will start to see and feel a difference in weight. However, it won’t work on its own, you still need a balanced diet and exercise.
